Holy Saturday

Background to Holy Saturday

Holy Saturday

The Easter Vigil celebrated on the eve of Easter Sunday is one of the most noble and sacred liturgies in the Church’s year.  During the vigil the church remembers the wonders the Lord God has done for his people from the beginning of time and looks forward to his future coming at the end of time.

The Vigil is divided into four parts:

Part 1:

The blessing of the Paschal Fire and the Preparation of the Paschal Candle.

“..the church calls upon her sons and daughters, scattered throughout the world, to come together and pray…”

You too can light a candle and follow the prayers of the vigil…

Part 2:

The Liturgy of the Word

“Let us listen with quiet hearts to the Word of God.

Let us meditate on how God in times past saved his people

And in these, the last days, has sent us his Son as our Redeemer.”
